To configure your router, follow the steps below:

Connect to Your Router

Connect your computer to your router by use of an Ethernet cable or wireless connection.

Identify Your Router’s IP Address

Each device, whether it be a phone, tablet, router, or other computing devices, has a unique internet protocol address, or IP address. To connect to your router, you will need to identify the router’s IP address, which should be 192.168.0.1. If your address isn’t 192.168.0.1, there are various ways of identifying your router’s IP.

First look on the router itself. Most routers display the IP address, username, and password on the back or bottom of the device or the packaging. If you cannot find it, consider that most routers use one of the following default IP addresses:

  • 192.168.0.1
  • 192.168.1.1
  • 192.168.2.1
  • 192.168.1.100
  • 192.168.1.254
  • 192.168.0.50
  • 192.168.10.1

The majority of routers and some modem brands use the 192.168.0.1 IP address. The following companies and brands typically use 192.168.0.1 as a default:

  • AT&T DSL Internet service (Only in the US)
  • Bellsouth’s Westell DSL modems (Only in the US)
  • Billion ADSL routers or modems
  • Cayman Internet gateways
  • Linksys SRW2024 managed switches, routers or modems
  • Netopia
  • 3Com OfficeConnect routers and modems

What is the Username and Password for 192.168.0.1

How do you know what username and password to use? Was your IP address displayed on the router or packaging? If so, it probably also contains your login information.

Routers generally have default usernames and passwords.

  • The word “admin” is regularly used as both the username and password but may vary depending on your router
  • Other routers use “admin” as the username and “password” as the password
  • Hiltron routers use “cusadmin” as the username and need a password
  • Lynksis WCG200-CC v1 (Comcast) routers use “comcast” as the username and “1234” as the password
  • Motorola routers use “admin” as the username and “motorola” as the password
  • Some routers might not require any username or password at all

The possibilities are endless, but first, try “admin” as both username and password. If all else fails, you can find lists of default login details for different brands, on the internet. Also consider that you can access some routers, such as Google Wi-Fi through a mobile app.

Why you need access your router at 192.168.0.1

Update Security Settings

You need to update your router’s security settings to ensure no one gains access without permission. There are three settings you need to change on the router to secure your wireless network:

  • Router login password. All routers come with a default password. You should change the password to avoid any unauthorized access.
  • Wi-Fi password. To maintain security and full control over who accesses your network, you should change the user login password for your Wi-Fi network.
  • Security mode. Select a minimum WPA2 level of security to protect and secure your network.

Modify Network Settings

Some of the network settings you should consider modifying include:

  • Your network name, which is the name a user will select when they connect to your network. Select a name that identifies your network, especially when there are other Wi-Fi networks in your area.
  • The channel your network uses to transmit data. While some routers can automatically search for an appropriate channel, you may need to change channels for enhanced performance.
  • Depending on the device, your router may offer additional settings and capabilities. In some cases, it may allow you to attach external storage or implement parental control.

Update or edit your security and network settings

Router Login Information

Your login information is the first setting you should manually change. Click on “Settings” and select “Reset Router Password.” Type in your desired password and save the new settings before logging out. Note that your Wi-Fi password is also known as a Network Security Key, WPA key or even WAP/WPA2.

To reset the router admin login to default, hold the reset button on the router. After about 10 seconds, a router with IP 192.168.0.1 will automatically reset to “admin” as username and password.

Router IP Address

First, log in to your router by using the IP address determined in step 2 of this article. You can change the IP address by clicking on “Setup” and selecting “Network Setup.” Navigate to the “Router Settings” and type in your new IP address.

Parental Controls

Parental controls enable you to protect your children from inappropriate online content. Parental controls have two categories:

  • Monitoring parental control enables you to see what your child is doing online
  • Filtering parental control allows you to control access to age-restricted content and limit the internet usage time

Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID)

Any user who wishes to connect to your router will need the Wi-Fi network name and password. You will find your Wi-Fi network name on the device label, packaging, or installation paperwork. On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 devices, you can find the network name and security key (password) in the “Network and Sharing Center.” On Mac devices, you can search for the network name and password under Applications – Utilities.

You can change your network name and password in the admin panel after logging into your router. Note that, if you modify the name or password, all users will have to connect to the network with the new credentials.

Find the IP address of your Router

For Windows devices:

  • Type “cmd” into the search bar.
  • In the black, DOS-like window, type in “ipconfig” and search through the results for your default address.

Mac OS:

  • On the top of the screen, click on the Apple menu
  • Select “System Preferences”
  • Click on the “Network” icon
  • Select the network connection
  • Click on “Advanced”

You can also search for instruction manuals to determine the IP address via your browser. Simply type “Get router IP on” followed by the device name. These online manuals will assist in finding the default login information for your router and step-by-step instructions on how it operates.

Troubleshoot – A Few More Things to Consider

Resetting Your Router

Are you having trouble logging into your router? Most routers contain a Reset, Restart or Reboot button. Using the reset button could potentially reset your router to factory settings. If you have already set up the network and security settings and need to reset the router, unplug it from the power source. Give it a minute and then plug it back in.

If you do choose to use the reset button, press and hold it for 30 seconds leaving your router plugged in then allow your router to restart and then try to login again.

If a regular reset doesn’t work, try the “30-30-30” reset option. Hold down the reset button for 30 seconds while the router has power. Unplug the router while continuing to hold down the button for another 30 seconds. Plug the router back into the power while holding the reset button for the last 30 seconds.

Updating Firmware

You should update your router’s firmware for better performance, faster internet speed and bug fixes. If resetting your router doesn’t fix performance issues, consider running an update.

Some routers have an automatic firmware update function built-in. Run the update function and allow the router to download and update by itself.

Certain router updates require that you use a desktop or mobile app. In other cases, you will have to update the firmware by using a web-based interface manually. To run a manual update, follow these easy steps:

  • Go to the manufacturer/vendor support website and download the firmware
  • If the download is in a zip file, open the file and copy the file to your desktop
  • Log into your router.
  • Navigate to the firmware update section. You will typically find the update section by clicking on Administration – System – Setup – Advanced/Tools
  • Browse for the firmware file you just downloaded
  • Select “update” or “upload” and allow the process to complete

Important notes when updating firmware

  • When running an update, you should not unplug or turn off the router.
  • Follow vendor instructions where provided.
  • Updates may reset your router to default settings. Consider saving the settings to a file before updating your firmware.
